Challenge
Qatar Museums presented us with a unique brief to develop with them a visual language that encapsulated Olafur Eliasson’s The Curious Desert exhibition in Qatar. Our work had to communicate that the two locations of the exhibition, at NMoQ and the Al Thakira desert, were a part of one opening. This connection would ultimately help in encouraging a wider and more diverse footfall at both premises.
Solution
We took inspiration from the key components that distinguish this exhibition by Olafur Eliasson. The setting plays a key role, and particularly the outdoor exhibition which takes place in the desert. We aimed to reflect the beauty of the ordinary, which is one of the central themes of Eliasson’s work and artistic mission. We created a series of visuals inspired by eye-catching light leaks, refraction techniques, and other colourful elements which are often highlighted within Eliasson’s work. The colourful aspects of Eliasson’s work combined with the NMoQ facets create a striking and memorable visual language.
